Each year, new studies begin to link the effect gum disease can have on the heart, and we at My Dentists have been helping spread the word! The fact is, every hour of every day in the U.S., someone dies of oral cancer, which is the sixth-most common diagnosed form of the disease. The five-year survival rate is only 50 percent, and oral cancer is one of the few cancers whose survival rate has not improved. How to freshen bad breath [Video]

Drs. Michalski, Yeager, and Pinnavaia, your Charlotte dentists, recognize that many of our patients are concerned about bad breath, or halitosis. While some cases of bad breath are persistent (chronic bad breath), generally bad breath is transient, and can be prevented.

We recently came across this helpful video about bad breath and thought it was worth sharing with our patients. The video explains what might cause bad breath and some ways that it can be avoided. In most instances, bad breath can be prevented by practicing common oral hygiene techniques that you have probably heard us emphasize during a visit to My Dentists, such as brushing and flossing daily. February also marks American Heart Month at My Dentists!

You may remember our post from last week, when we discussed February being National Dental Health Month. But did you know February is also American Heart Month?

It’s a great time to take notice of the health of your heart, say Drs. Yeager, Michalski and Pinnavaia. Cardiovascular disease remains American's number one killer, according to the American Heart Association. Recent studies have shown a correlation between gum disease and heart disease, underscoring the importance of good oral health care.

Visiting our office regularly can help prevent gum disease or at least catch it in its early stages. And because people with dental insurance are more likely to visit their dentist when they should, a healthy mouth begins with a visit to My Dentists. In observance of Heart Month, it’s also important to know your numbers: blood pressure (less than 120/80), cholesterol (less than 200) and BMI (less than 25). February Marks National Dental Health Month

Did you know February is National Dental Health Month? It's a great time of the year to renew those resolutions about continuing to practice great dental hygiene at home and by visiting My Dentists. Today, we thought we'd discuss the importance of preventative oral care. While most people are familiar with traditional heart-saving practices such as eating healthy and exercising regularly, lesser-known are the benefits that great oral hygiene provides to one’s cardiovascular health.

Here are a few tips to help you continue those New Year's resolutions:

*Remember that poor oral hygiene is linked to serious common diseases such as cardiovascular disease, bacterial pneumonia and osteoporosis.

*Brush and floss every day to remove the plaque that can lead to cavities. Flossing daily removes food debris that your toothbrush cannot reach after meals.

*Replace your toothbrush on a regular basis. You should replace your toothbrush every three to four months or after a cold or illness to prevent re-infection. Remember to use a soft toothbrush so you won’t wear off the enamel of your teeth.

*Visit our Charlotte, NC office regularly. The American Dental Association recommends you visit Drs. Michalski, Yeager and Pinnavaia every six months for regular checkups and cleanings. Fluoride treatments twice a year will help prevent tooth decay.

My Dentists, offering TMJ treatment in Charlotte

At My Dentists, we know millions of Americans suffer from chronic facial and neck pain as well as recurrent headaches. In some cases this pain is due to Temporomandibular Disorder, or TMD.

Your temporomandibular joints, or jaw joints, connect your lower jawbone to your skull. As you may imagine, these joints get quite a lot of use throughout the day as you speak, chew, swallow, and yawn. Pain in and around these joints can be unpleasant and may even restrict movement.

Symptoms of TMD are known to include:

* Pain in the jaw area
* Pain, ringing, or stuffiness in the ears
* Frequent headaches or neck aches
* Clicking or popping sound when the jaw moves
* Swelling on the sides of the face
* Muscle spasms in the jaw area
* A change in the alignment of top and bottom teeth
* Locked jaw or limited opening of the mouth

Gummy Tummy? From My Dentists

At My Dentists, we know the rumors going around – mostly among young people – that once you swallow a piece of chewing gum it will stake a claim and take up residency in your stomach for at least seven years! We really hate to take all the fun out of the mystery, but the truth is that chewing gum, when swallowed, will enter the stomach and move through the digestive system just like any other piece of food and leave the body long before seven years! So, if you ever have accidentally swallowed a piece of gum, there is no need to worry!

This being said, gum does not have any dietary benefits, so while it’s not harmful to swallow, you still want to avoid swallowing it. If you are a gum-chewer, make sure you chew sugarless gum, because gum with sugar can lead to cavities. Sugarless gum still has the same amount of flavor, but with less cavity causing ingredients. You see, when the bacterium in your mouth breaks down sugar, what’s left behind is acid. This acid eats away at the enamel coating of your teeth, causing holes that we call cavities. Cavities can lead to other long term mouth problems if they are not treated in time, so it is best to try and avoid overexposing your teeth to too many harmful substances!

Are you brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing? If yes, we think that’s great! But, don’t forget that it’s also important to visit the team at My Dentists every six months, in addition to brushing your teeth a couple times a day. Regular dental checkups are important for maintaining good oral health. Drs. Michalski, Yeager and Pinnavaia can:

• Check for problems that might not be seen or felt
• Detect cavities and early signs of decay
• Treat oral health problems early
• Show you how to properly brush and floss your teeth

How often should you replace your toothbrush?

First of all, season's greetings from our entire team at My Dentists! Winter is here, and with it comes the dreaded cold and flu season. After recovering from your cold, one of the most important steps you can take to avoid becoming reinfected is replacing your toothbrush!

Germs are known to linger on the bristles, and you risk prolonging your sickness by continuing to use the same toothbrush. Be smart - keep a spare, just in case! To protect your toothbrush from bacteria all year long, consider the following tips:

• Wash your hands before and after brushing

• Allow the brush to air dry after each use, harmful bacteria dies after being exposed to oxygen

• Store the toothbrush in an upright position to allow water to drain and dry faster

• Replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months. Worn bristles are less effective in properly cleaning your teeth, and can actually be damaging to teeth if used too long!

My Dentists, giving back to the community

Happy Monday! Our team at My Dentists are having an inter-office competition to raise money for families in need this holiday season. The front office is challenging the back office in a Dec. 4 bowling tournament to see who can raise the most money and whose team will be the better bowler. It should be tons of fun! We plan on having 80 bowlers (20 teams total).

On Saturday, December 4th we will be participating in a charity bowling tournament hosted by a networking group called Business Leaders of Charlotte, or BLOC, and all proceeds from the event will go to families that have been chosen through the Victims Assistance Division of United Family Services that are in need of support. (All donations are tax-deductible.)

Please help us raise money to support Charlotte families less fortunate during this holiday season by choosing which team you think will win and placing a donation into their jar at our office.

The 411 on Halloween treats, from My Dentists

For our patients concerned about going overboard on candies this weekend, sugar and other sweets, this post is just for you!

Our entire team at My Dentists will tell you all those sweet, sour and sticky candies may taste great, but these treats are known to damage teeth! Did you know sour candies can be acidic to your teeth, and actually wear down the enamel that protects them? Candies like Starburst and Skittles are the worst for your teeth since these candies have a low pH value, which is known to ruin enamel.

We encourage you to try and limit the amount of these candies you eat this evening, and when you do eat them, either rinse your mouth with water afterward or drink a glass of milk or eat a slice of cheese.

At My Dentists, we just can't believe September is already over. It's fall; the leaves are turning color, the weather is crisp and cool and tomorrow, October 1st, marks the official start of National Dental Hygiene Month, a time for Drs. Michalski, Yeager and Pinnavaia (and our staff) to raise awareness of the benefits of a healthy beautiful smile.

This year's theme is “Healthy Habits are Easier than You Think,” which focuses on prevention. At My Dentists, we know everyone is busy; living a life on-the-go is difficult for most people, but our staff is here to tell you keeping a healthy mouth shouldn’t be.

Three tips for a stressful mouth, courtesy of TV's Dr. Oz

We hope you're enjoying your Friday! TV's Doctor Oz recently did a segment titled, Three Signs of Stress in Your Mouth, and provided some solutions to relieve tension. Our staff at My Dentists thought we'd pass along his suggestions!

1. Teeth Grinding: Mouth Guard & “Hook & Pull” Exercise - Dr. Oz said that people who grind their teeth tend to have a lot more stress hormone in their body, and that grinding your teeth can cause headaches, earaches and pain. Also, the Chicago Dental Society has suggested that since the recession began in 2007, teeth grinding, or bruxism, has been on the rise. A mouth guard can help relieve your teeth grinding, and Dr. Oz says that you can do a “Hook and Pull” exercise when your put one index finger in either side of your mouth and pull your mouth out horizontally. Then from that position you can massage the muscle, which can be very helpful for getting rid of stress.

2. Canker Sores: Hydrogen Peroxide & Milk of Magnesia - Dr. Oz said canker sores are stress-related and often happen when your immune system is suppressed. A good home remedy, Dr. Oz said, is to swish around a solution of 50 percent water and 50 percent hydrogen peroxide inside of your mouth. Also, you may dab Milk of Magnesia on your canker sore 3-4 times a day for relief.

3. Gingivitis: Cranberry Floss - Here's Dr. Oz's theory: Gum disease, or periodontal disease, is more common among people who are stressed out because roughly 50 percent of people do not floss or brush regularly when they are under stress, which causes their gums to recede and pull away from your teeth. Dr. Oz recommends drinking unsweetened cranberry juice to ward off plaque, and said you can even buy cranberry floss at your local supermarket.

Ask My Dentists: What, exactly, are wisdom teeth?

Good question. Wisdom teeth are a type of molar that is found in the very back of your mouth and are the last molars to develop. There are four wisdom teeth: upper left, upper right, lower left, and lower right. These teeth usually appear in late teens or early twenties but may become impacted (fail to erupt) due to lack of room in the jaw or angle of entry. The removal of wisdom teeth has become so commonplace that it is almost a rite of passage for young adults.

Drs. Yeager, Michalski and Pinnavaia will all tell you that when a tooth is impacted, it may need to be removed. If it is not removed, you may develop gum tenderness, swelling, or even severe pain. Impacted wisdom teeth that are partially or fully erupted tend to be quite difficult to clean and are susceptible to tooth decay, recurring infections, and yes, even gum disease.

$1.25 for a cavity? From My Dentists

Our doctors and staff at My Dentists know that vending machines are a quick way to satisfy hunger when you're on the go: you put in $1.25 and you get back a candy bar, bag of chips or even a soda. But that’s not all! Vending machines not only dispense sweet treats and caffeine bursts, but they also dispense cavities!

Every time you chow down on that chocolate bar, the bacteria in your mouth have a party feasting on the sugar. The sugar quickly turns into acid; that’s right, ACID!!! The acid sits on your teeth and eats away at the tooth’s natural enamel (the stuff that protects your tooth from decay). When this enamel is eaten away by the acid on your tooth, you get a cavity! Brushing your teeth after eating a sugary treat can help prevent cavities; but before you indulge remind yourself: “Can’t brush? Hold the sugar!”

When choosing a snack, Drs. Yeager, Michalski and Pinnavaia want you to consider the following nutritional options that will not only satisfy your hunger and that "sweet tooth," but won’t cause acid build up resulting in cavities:

•Fresh Fruits (berries, oranges, melon, pears, etc)
•Raw Vegetables (broccoli, celery, carrots, etc)
•Bread
•Pretzels (low salt)
•Milk (low or non-fat)
•Cheese (low or non-fat)
•Nuts and seeds (pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etc)
•Sliced meat

At My Dentists, we know that gingivitis, the early stage of gum disease, can be difficult to recognize. Many people do not recognize the warning signs- bleeding and swollen gums, as a precursor to gum disease. This month a national campaign is underway to raise awareness about gum health and periodontal disease, and we wanted to help do our part to spread the word!

Drs. Michalski, Yeager and Pinnavaia will tell you early recognition and action are the most important steps to health gums, and ultimately a health body too! Studies are published every year linking oral health, including the gums, to the health of other areas of the body, such as the heart. One of the most important steps to improving the care of your gums is recognizing the warning signs for gum disease. These can include:

• Gums that appear red or swollen
• Gums that feel tender
• Gums that bleed easily (during brushing or flossing)
• Gums that recede or pull away from the teeth

National Smile Week at My Dentists!

Did you know August 9-13 is National Smile Week? For our staff at My Dentists, it's a great time to remind patients of Drs. Michalski, Yeager and Pinnavaia to practice good oral hygiene to keep those teeth shining and happy! This includes brushing and flossing regularly, avoiding foods that can stain your teeth such as tea and coffee and visiting our convenient Charlotte office every six months or as recommended.

The American Dental Association, or ADA, recommends the following for good oral hygiene:

• Brush your teeth twice a day with an ADA-accepted fluoride toothpaste. Replace your toothbrush every three or four months, or sooner if the bristles are frayed. A worn toothbrush won't do a good job of cleaning your teeth.

• Clean between teeth daily with floss or an interdental cleaner. Tooth decay–causing bacteria still linger between teeth where toothbrush bristles can’t reach. This helps remove the sticky film on teeth called plaque and food particles from between the teeth and under the gum line.

• Eat a balanced diet and limit between-meal snacks.

• Visit My Dentists regularly for professional cleanings and oral exams.

Ask My Dentists: what’s the deal with flossing?

Happy Friday! Today we thought we'd talk a little about flossing. Our staff at My Dentists hope you're not a part of the 51 percent (!) of Americans who don’t floss daily. Or worse, we hope you're not part of the 10 percent who never floss at all.

Flossing, after all, is just as important for your dental health as brushing regularly. Flossing cleans food and plaque that build up between teeth and below the gumline, key areas that brushing simply cannot reach.

Flossing 3-to-5 minutes every day is recommended, but even 60 seconds of flossing has a great benefit over not flossing at all. Also, make sure to always brush your teeth after you floss, and to rinse with water or mouthwash. When you begin flossing you may experience gum pain or bleeding, but with daily flossing and brushing this should stop within a week or so.

Yes, there is a connection between your oral health and your overall health

At My Dentists, our experienced doctors will tell you that your oral health relates to much more than just having perfectly-aligned teeth. In fact, according to a recent study by the British Columbia Dental Hygienists' Association, periodontal disease is linked to not only to your oral health, but also the health of other bodily functions.

While we know that proper oral hygiene is important for many everyday functions, such as eating, talking and kissing, new correlations have now been found linking poor oral health and cardiovascular disease, diabetes, respiratory problems and other diseases.

Gum disease (also called periodontal disease) is an infection of the tissues that support your teeth. It is a major cause of tooth loss in adults. Because gum disease is usually painless, you may not know you have it. At each regular checkup, our dedicated staff will measure the depth of the shallow v-shaped crevice (called a sulcus) between your tooth and gums to identify whether you have gum disease.

Sure it’s easier to go relax at the beach, hit the mall or watch TV most days, but reading during the summer is a vital step in brain development. After all, TV doesn't replicate the experience of reading a good book - books are great for kids as well, as reading helps children maintain their skill level and be prepared for classes in the fall. In addition, a new study has found that the number of books in the home might predict a child's educational future.

Ask My Dentists: How can I brighten my smile?

At My Dentists, we see lots of patients concerned about bad breath. So our staff thought we'd educate you about what you can do to really keep your chompers clean and breath minty fresh!

Naturally, good oral health and hygiene is the first step. With proper brushing and regular dental checkups you can keep bad breath (halitosis) in check.

Certain foods, medications, smoking, sinus issues, or even gum disease cause most bad breath. If the stink lingers for longer than 24 hours, you should see us at My Dentists. It might be something more serious, like dehydration, zinc deficiency, diabetes, liver failure, kidney failure, or even certain kinds of cancers!

In the meantime, here are some home remedies to keep you smiling bright:

Spice Up Your Life: Snack on some cloves, fennel, or anise after each particularly odorous snack.

Don’t forget the tongue: Lots of people brush their teeth regularly, but leave the tongue alone. One of the main causes of bad breath is food and plaque residue on the surface of your tongue. So give it a nice gentle brush-over too!

Watch your drinking habits: The worst options are coffee, wine, whiskey, and beer.

Frequent brushing: Carry a toothbrush with you so brushing after each meal is convenient and refreshing! Trust us, you’ll love the way it makes you feel. If you can’t brush, still swish around a couple sips of water to remove any lingering food.

Make your own Gargle: Gargling with a home mixture of sage, calendula, and myrrh gum extracts four times a day should ward off that bad breath potential.

Parsley’s there for a reason: Finish your parsley after you finish your dinner and you’ll find a refreshing breath enhancer. Hate the texture? Throw a couple sprigs in a blender to sip after each meal.

Sugarless Gum: Always a good idea to carry some mints or sugarless gum for that quick spruce up before you meet the boss.

Don’t cut that cheese: The stronger the cheese, the stinkier your breath can become. Think about blue cheese and Roquefort? They really get the party started in your mouth and it’s hard to make them leave!

Did you know the month of May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month? In 1983, President Ronald Reagan encouraged Americans everywhere to include more physical activity into their lives, and - wouldn't you know it - the reminder is even more significant today as folks are distracted more and more by TV, social networking and working more hours. Living an active lifestyle can - and does - improve physical and mental health, productivity and overall well-being. The best part? It doesn’t have to take a lot of time!

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has provided these public health guidelines, which call for people to exercise one hour every day of moderate intensity physical activity (such as playing sports or brisk walking) or one hour and 15 minutes of vigorous activity (jogging, dancing and jumping rope).

At My Dentists, our staff and Drs. Yeager, Michalski and Pinnavaia encourage our patients to exercise or participate in sports. However, we want to remind you to always wear a mouth guard or other forms of mouth or facial protection when doing so. My Dentists, helping you understand cavities

At My Dentists, we know there is one word nobody wants to hear when they visit our office: Cavity.

But what exactly is a cavity and how do you get a cavity? A cavity is a hole that develops in a tooth when the tooth begins to decay. It’s important to get a cavity filled as soon as it’s detected so that it does not grow bigger.

A cavity is caused by plaque, a sticky substance that forms on the tooth as a result of germ and bacteria build-up. Plaque is acidic and as it clings to your teeth the acids eat away the outside of the tooth (also called the enamel) and a hole is formed.

Yes, cavities can be repaired here at My Dentists, but here are a few simple steps you can take to prevent cavities:

• Brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste at least twice daily
• Gently brush your gums to keep them healthy (when choosing a toothbrush it is recommended to use soft bristles)
• Floss your teeth at least once a day to remove plaque and food that may be caught between the teeth where your toothbrush can’t reach
• Limit the amount of soda and sugary treats you eat/drink
• Be sure to visit Drs. Pinnavaia, Michalski or Yeager every six months for a teeth cleaning and check-up

Excessive morning sickness can also contribute to tooth decay, as the stomach acids introduced to the mouth during vomiting wear away the protective enamel coating on the teeth.

• Gingivitis & Gum Disease
The primary issue to avoid during pregnancy is gum disease, due to its link to premature birth. The precursor to gum disease is gingivitis, a condition in which plaque buildup on teeth irritates the gums, making them red, swollen, and sensitive. The high levels of hormones in the bloodstream brought on by pregnancy exaggerate your gums’ reaction to irritation from plaque.

• Loose Teeth
Another risk faced during pregnancy is loosening teeth. The large amounts of hormones in your bloodstream can have an adverse affect on the bones and ligaments that create the foundation of your teeth, weakening them to the point that teeth may loosen.

The importance of smiling, from the team at My Dentists

our staff has some good news to report! People with big, happy smiles may actually out-live those who don’t, according to a new study at Wayne State University in Michigan.

Drs. Michalski, Pinnavaia and Yeager have known for a long time that positive emotion has been linked to both physical and mental health, but researchers at the university did something quite interesting: they used information from the Baseball Register to look at photos of 230 players who began their baseball careers prior to 1950 and studied their smile intensity (wide smile, no smile or partial smile). The players' smile ratings were then compared with data from deaths that occurred from 2006 through last year.

The researchers then took into account other factors associated with longevity, such as body mass index, or BMI, career length and college attendance. They found that players who weren't smiling died at the average age of 72.9 years. Players with partial smiles lived to be 75. Those with big smiles, however, lived on average to be 79.9 years old!

Dairy, your diet and periodontal disease, from My Dentists

Drs. Pinnavaia, Michalski and Yeager want to know: is dairy a major part of your diet? If not, it should be! A 2008 study from the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) has found that regular consumption of dairy products, such as milk, cheese and yogurt, can lower your chances of contracting periodontal disease, or gum disease.

Gum disease is caused by a bacterial infection in the mouth that affects the gums and jaw. Gum disease results in a loss of teeth and bone, and has been connected to certain cases of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, respiratory disease and osteoporosis.

Results of the study showed that adults who consume at least 55 grams of lactic acid a day are less at risk for gum disease. Eating dairy is not just healthy for building strong bones, but is essential for maintaining a strong, healthy mouth. Next time you reach for a quick snack, choose some cheese, or a glass of milk, and remember with each bite, and every sip you are preserving your teeth for a lifetime of smiles and good oral health!

March is National Nutrition Month! From Drs. Yeager, Michalski and Pinnavaia

You may remember our post from a few weeks ago about February being National Children's Dental Health Month. Well, we're now well into March, and March happens to be National Nutrition Month. Every March, Drs. Pinnavaia, Michalski and Yeager, as well as thousands of dentists take time to celebrate this occasion. This March, our team at My Dentists want you to think diabetes, obesity and periodontal disease, and how healthful eating and physical activity may improve periodontal health.

Drs. Pinnavaia, Michalski, Yeager and team know small changes really can make a big difference, and the American Dietetic Association (ADA) has some advice on ways to start improving your diet beginning this March:

• Focus on fruits and veggies: Add a serving each day to one meal and increase it every few weeks. Adding more of these foods into your diet is important whether you buy frozen, fresh or organic.

• Look locally: From farmer’s markets to community-supported agriculture, you have many options to find new, fresh foods here in Charlotte.

• Make your calories count: When you are choosing between options, focus instead on the one with more of the vitamins and nutrients that you need. Sometimes, foods with fewer calories aren’t always the healthiest options.

• Test your taste buds: Expand your horizons. Try a fish you’ve never eaten before or find a new vegetable recipe. By testing yourself, you might find new health favorites to add to your regular grocery list.

• Trick yourself with treats: If you have a sweet tooth, enjoy some fruit and yogurt for dessert. If you care for a snack in the afternoon, have some trail mix or nuts.

The problem with bottled water, from My Dentists

We at My Dentists want you to know that as more families turn to bottled water and away from the tap, they may be missing out on one important ingredient that most brands of bottled water fail to include: fluoride!

As of 2005, bottled water is second only to soft drinks as the most popular drink in the U.S., beating out milk, juice, and – more significantly – tap water. Between 2001 and 2006, the amount of bottled water sold in the U.S. rose an average of 10% per year. And many dental health specialists point to bottled water’s increased popularity as the culprit behind rising rates of cavities.

Because fluoride helps strengthen teeth, it is an important component of maintaining good oral health. The benefits of fluoride were noticed in the early part of the twentieth century, when researchers found communities with low levels of tooth decay. It turned out that these towns had measurable levels (around 1 part per million) of fluoride in their drinking water.

Beginning in the 1940s, communities have fluoridated their water supplies, and dentists have seen a significant decline in cavities ever since. The American Dental Association endorses both community water fluoridation and the use of fluoride-containing products as a safe means of preventing tooth decay. Between tap water and toothpaste, most of us get sufficient amounts of fluoride.

But if your family avoids fluoridated tap water in favor of ever-more-popular bottled water, you could be missing out on the levels of fluoride necessary to make a difference in your oral health. If bottled water is your water of choice, check the label to make sure that your brand contains fluoride. As of a 2006 decision, the FDA allows bottled water containing .6 to 1.0 milligrams per liter of fluoride to carry a label stating that fluoridated water may reduce the risk of dental cavities or tooth decay. The ADA has backed this decision.

Of course, simply drinking fluoridated water is not a magic ticket to perfect teeth. To keep your choppers in tip-top shape, it’s important to brush and floss daily and avoid sugary sweets, in addition to maintaining your fluoride intake and visiting us at My Dentists regularly.

Last week, we blogged about the need to screen for gum and heart disease during the month of February, which is designated "America's Heart Month." Well, February is also National Children’s Dental Health Month, and Drs. Pinnavaia, Yeager and Michalski are here to tell you about the need for preventative oral care in kids.

For 60 Februaries, the American Dental Association, or ADA, has sponsored National Children's Dental Health Month to raise awareness about the importance of oral health. National Children's Dental Health Month began as a one-day event in 1941 in a Cleveland, OH clinic. Forty years later, in 1981, the program was extended to a month-long celebration known today as National Children’s Dental Health Month.

Each February, Drs. Pinnavaia, Yeager and Michalski and thousands of dental professionals focus on the preventive oral care of America's children. Talking gum disease with My Dentists

It’s easy to tell when you have a cavity; but unfortunately, gum disease can exist in your mouth without you even knowing, say Drs. Michalski, Yeager and Pinnavaia. In fact, you can have the beginning stages of gum disease without noticing any pain or discomfort. Since gum disease can be undetectable, it’s important to watch for warning signs in order to prevent the disease from worsening!

A few helpful Invisalign® tips, from My Dentists

We've blogged about the advantages of Invisalign treatment at My Dentists in the past, and today thought we'd share a few helpful Invisalign tips with you, our outstanding patients.

When wearing your Invisalign aligners, Drs. Michalski, Yeager and Pinnavaia want you to ask yourself the following questions:

1. Am I eating with my aligners on? - These aligners are removable and should be taken out when you eat.

2. Am I drinking anything other than water with my aligners on? - Though it's not a necessity for you to take out your aligners while you drink, think about how sticky a soda is. If you take out your aligners when drinking a soda, you have a better chance of keeping your aligners clean.

3. Am I brushing before putting the trays on? - The aligners have both an inside and outside. Keeping the outside clean is easy. Keeping the inside clean is also easy: just make sure you've brushed your teeth before putting the trays on.

The CEREC Process

First, our doctors will meet with you to discuss the details of the procedure. During the procedure, Drs. Using Computer Aided Design, the photo serves as an optimal impression. The restoration will then be designed by the computer on this impression. Meet Dr. Michalski:

Dr. Stan Michalski grew up in Clarian, Pennsylvania. He has lived and worked in Charlotte since 1987, after receiving his dental degree from Case Western. Dr. Michalski has a passion for dentistry and has been a big advocate of technology in the dental office his entire career. MY Dentists has been on the cutting edge of implementing technologies such as digital radiography, CEREC restorations and Invisalign orthodontics. Dr. Michalski is now also in demand as a consultant, spreading some of his knowledge to other dentists and offices around the country, and has published articles in various dental journals. He truly enjoys dentistry and helping educate patients about their oral health, their specific dental needs and how best to achieve them.

When he is not in the office or out consulting he and his wife, Janice, enjoy traveling and golfing together, as well as spending as much time as possible with their two grown children.

Meet Dr. Yeager:

Dr. Richard Yeager was raised in Erie, Pennsylvania. He has lived and practiced in Charlotte since 1983, after receiving his dental degree from Temple University. Dr. Yeager has a heartfelt love for dentistry, which is evident in how he cares for and treats his patients. He is active in the dental community, having served on the board of the North Carolina Dental society, and as president of the Randolph study club. He is a certified Invisalign provider and completely devoted to providing the highest standard of care for his patients. Dr. Yeager completely embraces the practice philosophy of "our family caring for yours".

Outside of the office, Dr. Yeager and his wife, Kathy, live in Charlotte with their two daughters. He is active in his church, and his hobbies include golf, photography, and woodworking. Additionally, he is a Tae Kwon Do instructor and practices as a third degree black belt.

Meet Dr. Pinnavaia:

Dr. Tom Pinnavaia was raised in East Lansing, Michigan. He lived and practiced in the metro Detroit area after receiving his dental degree from the University of Michigan in 1992. Dr. Pinnavaia moved to Charlotte, NC, to join the MY Dentists Team in 2007. Dr. Pinnavaia brings a zeal and love of dentistry to his patients. He enjoys educating his patients and explaining all treatment options so they can be as active as possible in charting the course of treatment. He is active in his profession, and continues to educate himself in disciplines such as orthodontics, aesthetic dentistry, and endodontic services.

In his free time, Dr. Pinnavaia enjoys golfing, traveling, and reading. He counts music composition and classic cars among his hobbies. He, his wife, Stacie, and dog, Molar, live in Charlotte.
