A 2009 study in the Journal of the American Dental Association found that dentists were able to identify patients who were at risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD), the leading cause of death in the United States. The authors of the study looked at dentists “as a resource for identifying patients who were unaware of their increased cardiovascular risk factors.”
